Im new an see these products an ads on tv,for glucerna shakes an bars. I know some don't like the taste,but I like to drink a shake once in a while. Are these ok.

At 27g of carbohydrate per shake, I certainly wouldn't drink them. Not in a million years.

I make my own shakes, using a high quality whey protein powder - I control my carbs that way - I can have as little as 2g of carbohydrate in a shake, or as much as 10g if I put in a 1/2c of raspberries.

Many of the items like the 'glucerna' brand that SAY they're for diabetes, have put too many carbohydrates in them. Period.

Their 'meal bars' have 34g of carbohydrate. That's as much as I eat in some entire DAYs now... In addition to the 34g of carb they also contain 10g of sugar alcohols - which spike many people as much as carbs do.

And I'm allergic to whey, so I use egg white powder and they are good! I add some powder chocolate, some sweetener, water and full cream and they taste really good. A bit more trouble, but not much. I've learned to put the egg powder in a clean shaker and put it in the refrigerator til the next time I want one. That way it's not hard to mix as it is when I start from scratch. Egg powder doesn't mix as readily as whey seemed to.

I get my whey powder at Costco - it's the best price I can find, and there's no sugar and only 2g carbohydrate per serving. Egg protein powder is great if you can't handle whey.

I avoid soy protein - soy scares me. Most powders are made out of cheap (subsidized) genetically-modified soy, covered in Roundup (herbicide) and I do NOT want that. Soy, for many reasons, is NOT a health food.

I also don't use Casein protein either - there's lots of nutritional debate about it, so I'm avoiding it until further research is done.

I use 1 scoop protein powder, 1/2c heavy cream, 1/2 cup water, 1/2c raspberries, 1 pkt of stevia or erythritol to make a very creamy-smooth true LCHF shake. If you use frozen raspberries the consistency is like a milkshake, it's wonderful.

The old glucerna shake and bars were very high carb. But I heard a commercial for a new Glucerna shake but I haven't checked it out. Slim Fast has some low carb shakes, I think they are 2 carbs. I like to make my own with the Muscle Milk whey powder from Costco, too. It is the best price around. You can also make your own fancy coffee drinks with coffee, whey and Davinci or Torani sugar free flavored syrups and some heavy whipping cream.

The 'new' glucerna shakes appear to be their 'hunger smart' line. They are slightly lower carb at 16g per serving with 6g from sugar. The sugar is fructose.

The ingredients list also shows Maltodextrin, Soy Protein isolate, Soy Oil, Glycerine, Soy Lecithin, and other things I don't want to ingest.

I totally believe it's best to make your own. Just my opinion though.

Just more insanity (crazy like a fox) from the pharmaceutical industry. There's nothing in me that wants to accept a drink from Abbott Laboratories, apart from anything else.
