I have never had a high blook sugar leave before, now they are telling me I have gestational diabetes. I had gallbladder surgery in Apirl of this year. What I want to know is if my gallbladder surgery could have something to do with it? :(

Probably not. Has anyone else in your family ever had gestational diabetes? How were you diagnosed and what course of treatment has been advised for you?

gestational diabetes

No one has ever had it. They did the three hour GTT. Just that I need to go to a class and do some kind of diet. Check my blood sugar, and watch my carbs. I have not even been to the class yet, My fasting leaves have been normal.

Browse around the forum a bit. Someone who knows how will post links to Blood Sugar 101. However, be aware that most diabetes educators recommend higher amounts of carbohydrates per day that most of us eat. You don't mention what your usual diet is, but if you are a heavy soda drinker, drop all sodas and drink healthier (try water). Right away you have lowered the "junk" carbohydrates in so many people's diets. Then cut way back on all added sugar foods. Actually, the simpler the recipe, the better. Finally, lowering the amount of foods with processed flour in your diet will help also. Above the ground vegs have lower carbohydrate counts than root vegs. Do you have a meter?

The normal fasting levels, with the elevated GTT, may be confusing. It helps to understand a little about the progression of diabetes - or, to be more precise, the inability to properly metabolize carbohydrates.

One can be running higher-than-normal BG after meals for quite some time before it will affect fasting levels. That's why using FBG to track progression is not good enough. By the time FBG rises, the person is well into the diabetic range.

If you begin to test 1hr and 2hr after your meals, you will gain a better understanding of what is going on. Using that data, you will see the need to reduce carbs in your meals. And the result will be a healthier mother and baby.
