Resources for seniors with diabetes?

2327 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Checochinican
Recently diagnosed, I've been studying everything I can find. I am older than dirt (74) and have some common disabilities, such as COPD, which reduces my ability to engage in strenuous prolonged exercise. My appetite isn't what it used to be, so I fill up fast and right now am several pounds underweight.

Are there any resources, internet, books, etc., specifically for older people with type 2 diabetes? My blood glucose is coming under good control with diet alone, but I'd like to do everything possible to maintain gains and improve my overall fitness. My stamina sucks.

Checochinican, you are not that old! First, what medications are you taking? This will give me some ideas for some of the sites and books. I realize that with COPD you do have some limits on exercise and your location is not the best for winter exercise.

Basically, there are no specific books or sites for the people of our age with type 2 diabetes, but most are geared for people with type 2 of all ages.

One site that can get you started is by David Mendosa at David Mendosa: A Writer About Diabetes . There is a lot of reading here and he has a good search engine for finding information. I have been reading it for seven years and finding my way around his site quite easily now.

Good luck and keep a positive attitude.

This is my first reply, hope I'm doing this correctly. You say you're older than dirt - if that's a fairly recent photo of you, you look fantastic! I'm 65 but feel about 90. Good luck to you, now I have to go introduce myself.
Bob, I am not on any medications for diabetes (or anything else).

The diet I am following has brought my glucose down within the normal range. Too early to get really confident, but I am encouraged.
Keep up the effort and the confidence to stay off medications. Mine was discovered to late and they put me on oral meds which did nothing, so I was ready for insulin and the doctor agreed.

For books, I would suggest finding out what your local library may have before running out and buying any. Books can say different things to different people. This is by no mean comprehensive, but I have three books on this list that I constantly go back to reread. My list can be found at Exploring Diabetes Type 2: Published Resources . I urge you to read Gretchen Becker's book.

Next, here are a few sources from the internet Exploring Diabetes Type 2: Diabetes on the Internet . I have already given you David Mendosa's site.

If you would like other sources, please speak up. There are so many types of sources. A little help about topic material you are looking for would help rather than giving you a lot of general information sources.
Bob - thanks for all that. I do have Gretchen's book and, like you, found it valuable. I haven't seen Whitaker's book but have seen references to it. I may add it to my library.

You are in Iowa - where? Iowa (Van Buren County) is where my dad grew up. Some of my fondest memories are of vacations on his parents' farm.

I like your blog site - plan to explore it when I have a bit more time.
