My son has just turned 20. He was tired all the time and I urged him to go see a doctor. We have a strong history of autoimmune disease in our family and it concerned me.
The results of his blood work showed high glucose level and they wanted to retest. The second test done two weeks after the first showed a fasting glucose of 108, better the nurse said than the first one but his long term glucose was still a little higher than it should be. She told him to cut back on sugar. Her example was if he drank pop to cut back to just one a day and he should be fine.
They did not ask him to get rechecked at a future date.
I am very concerned. My son weighs only 116 lb. , exercises and does tai chi. My brother at 39 was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. His doctor told him not to worry when he first had slightly high glucose reading ,all he needed was to lose a little weight. He lost weight and kept losing and kept losing and couldn't stop. By the time he was diagnosed he had neropathy and other problems.
Should my son and I be concerned?
