Wife pregnant at 24 weeks.

Had a fasting of 99 on my meter today. Something to worry about. I will test her pre and post dinner numbers today and fasting tomorrow and then go to her gynec tomorrow.

She's not overweight. BMI was under 25 pre pregnancy. Gained 5 kgs in 5 months.

Something to worry about ? Any tips ?

Tony

PS: I know about the variation in meters also...

If your that worried than I would talk to a doc but unless there is a family history I would wait until after the praguncy is overwith then test you know how the body can be whacked out during this period however I don't see any harm in some periodic home testing and recording of the results for future discussions with the doctors by the way congrats on the new one to come hope everything turns out fine

Two of wife's grandparents were diabetic. Her mom is pre diabetic in denial (fastings ~ 110 -120) and her mom's brother is a type 2. So there's the family history....

Is a low carb diet in pregnancy acceptable ? I can make her move to a low-"er" carb I guess

Dear Tony,

First off, congratulations on the great news. Secondly, since the baby gets what the mother eats & drinks, low carb is a good idea IMHO. And thirdly GD has it's own set of parameters. You could do an OGTT at home if you are concerned. Bear in mind that the OGTT results for GD are different than in other cases.

I agree that you should be actively following this up now and not waiting until after the pregnancy. What the Mother eats is crucial to the development of the child... both now and in later life.

I had GD with both of my pregnancies.

The recommendations aren't much different from what most people here try to follow. 90 or below fasting, under 140 at 1 hour, under 120 at 2 hours. Its pretty standard for a doctor to order a GTT around 28 weeks into the pregnancy which is when GD usually shows up.

Definitely have her mention it at her next appointment, the doctor might order it a few weeks early.

Congrats to both of you. Here in the US all pregnant women are given an OGTT to determine if they have Gestational Diabetes. If you do have it then they give you fairly strick bg ranges , much stricter than normal D's. So if she is concerned have her ask her doc for the OGTT.

Congrats Tony, you should name him Paul.

Only way to be 100% is to get a tolerance test. Be on top of it. I know you are.

The doctor has already ordered the OGTT before the next appointment (after 4 weeks) but since we did a fasting today, I got concerned. I will check her dinner pp in about an hour from now.

Paul, I do not know whether I should name the baby Paul or Paulina because it's illegal in India to find out the gender of the child before birth...

ok, wife's PP was 107. Maybe I got worried (infact she also got very worried). Today in the evening one hour after fruits (pomegranate and grapes) was 101 and now 2 hours after a normal carby dinner was at 107

So I guess we are in the safe. The OGTT is still on the cards though !

Her bgs sound fine to me, but I am not a doctor. My husband and I always had so much fun trying out new names beforehad. My husband always came up with these historical names. I refused to do that to a kid.
