Hi. I'm 40 and recently had a blood draw to confirm I am not diabetic or even pre-diabetic. But at 37, I had gestational.

I am not obese although since I stopped breastfeeding, I've gained about 8-10 lbs I'm not too happy about and can't seem to drop easily.

I know the importance of diet and exercise, but I have an awful, awful sweet tooth. :( I crave sweets.

Type 2 runs in my family. My dad, his brother and their mom. And one out of two first cousins.

I need the help NOW before fate is handed to me in a candy dish.

Argh.

I have wondered... or rather... based on my gestational experience.... by nature I had failed that 1 hour sugar drink test. For the three hour test, my one hour was good but my two hour shot up and by three hours it did not come down enough. Almost, I basically barely failed.

I suspect I have more difficultly with sugar spikes later rather than sooner. My fasting numbers were always good. And I never needed insulin. Diet and exercise really, really helped while pregnant. To a point where I'd eat Breyer's Carb Smart ice cream bars some days.

I try to balance any sweets with proteins these days. I know I need to cut the sweets WAY more than I do. I need a kick in the pants before the diagnosis. I just can't seem to do it myself. It's stupid.

I barely drink juice.... once in a while I have a small amount diluted with water, as a treat. I'm a diet coke girl. I eat nuts. I love South Beach Diet prepared stuff, and any frozen lunches I eat I aim to keep below 50 grams of carbs, which is what my GD diet allowed me.

I eat whole grain everything when there's a choice, and that includes pasta. I look for fiber content. And yet, I still reach for the peppermint patties.

And I don't exercise ENOUGH. I wish I could hire a personal trainer and a nutritionist to motivate/help/force me.
