Hello all,

I am new to the forum, and was diagnosed diabetic type 2 a little over 3 years ago after having what the emergency room doctor called a "diabetic stroke". I have been on Novolog 3 X a day, and Lantus 2 X a day. I have tried to get answers on a few specific questions from various doctors, and everything I have been told is contradictory. It seems that if the doctors are not diabetic themselves, they don't really don't know, and the diabetic specialist I went to was just too impatient to make things clear to me.

I saw an episode of Dr. G on tv, about an autopsy she had performed on a lady who died after she had taken a long bus ride down south. The day was hot, and her insulin was in her purse. She took her insulin as prescribed, but ended up dying. They said her death had been caused by her insulin being rendered useless by heat, she went into a coma and died.

I get my insulin by mail, and at least 2 orders have arrived hot with the cold packs completely melted, and the bottles hot to touch. I complained to my rovider, and their pharmacist argued with me and said hot insulin was perfectly safe before it is opened, but must be refrigerated once opened.

I had been originally told by my doctor that insulin (once opened) could safely be kept at room temperature, and did not have to be refrigerated. (My home stays at 70 degrees year round, and I do take my insulin with me in an insulated bag with a cold pack if I leave home on hot days.)

Recently I noticed that my insulin has been coming with a warning label that it must be completely used within 28 days of being opened, and the rest must be discarded at the end of that period.

One doctor told me insulin could be taken before a meal, another told me not to do this, only take insulin AFTER you eat, as something may prevent your eating the meal, and there could be an insulin reaction. One doctor told me to take insulin IMMEDIATELY after eating, another said taking insulin within 30 minutes of eating is fine.

So,I would appreciate answers to the following questions:

Is it safe for insulin to be hot before it is opened?
Once opened, must it be refrigerated or is room temp ok?
Does insulin have to be discarded within 28 days of being opened?
Is it a bad idea to take insulin before eating a meal?
How long can you safely wait to inject insulin after eating?

Thank you so much,

Cherie

Thanks so much, Pam! That helps a lot. I still wonder a bit about taking insulin before eating. I took mine once just before we were going to eat, and a minor family emergency came up, and we had to leave in a rush. By the time we got where we had to go, I was shaking and felt like I was going to pass out. We ended up having to get candy out of a vending machine, which is not a good thing for a diabetic, but there was nothing else we could get to, and about 5 minutes later I felt a lot better. Scared me though, LOL

Thanks again for the information!

Cherie
