My son is 6 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 in March this year. He needs to keep up his fluid intake and now obviously cannot have fruit juice, milk etc freely. Unfortunately he has a pretty violent dislike of plain water! He actually heaves when he tries to drink it. I have been giving him sugar free squash and other sugar free drinks. These however, all contain artificial sweetners and due to the amount he drinks it worries me that he is taking so much of these chemicals into his body. Does anyone have any flavoured drink alternatives? Does anyone know of any drinks that are flavoured by something other than sugar or artificial sweetners. It is an issue that worries me. I am trying to get him to drink more water but it is an uphill struggle. Any help would be appreciated.

What type of water are you giving him, tap water, spring water, purified water. Spring water doesn't like me at all, niether does ice water, its odd I know.

Maybe try crushing up a few berries and put them in water, few drops of lemon juice. Do you have a water softener in your house. Softened water can have a high pH causing stomach upset. Few drops of lemon juice or lime juice may help.

We give our grandkids apple juice, the ones with 40% less sugar, then dilute that in half.

What about making your own icetea? I have seen several recipes where you can sweeten it with stevia or something similar.. (As I understand it, Stevia is natural?)

Or maybe make icecubes out of berries, and put them in carbonated water? (I hope that is the right word...)

Lemonslices (or lime, or maybe even an orangeslice?) in water?

I don't like water either, but I've discovered I can drink the LaCroix flavored sparkling water. There are 0 calories, sugars, proteins and obviously carbohydrates. It comes in 12 ounce cans in flavors of berry, coconut, lemon, lime.

Do try to add a few dashes of lemon to his water. Try giving him fluids without adding sweeteners like stevia just yet and see how he responds to it. U gotta train his taste buds not to care bat sugar. Catch them young they say isn' it?

Try the product Mio it's zero everything just changes the taste of water and you get no bad effects from it. Peach tea is my favorite one. Don't confuse this with their energy drink though. get Mio liquid water enhancer. All different kinds of flavors. Helps me drink my daily water.

Since you're looking for something for kids, Hawaiian punch has a "zero" series of mixes now. I've tried several and they are very good and so far do not effect my BG.

I mentioned this one only because your son could drink the same brand as normal children so he could feel more included.

I would suggest diluting fruit juice down a LOT and giving him that if you don't want artificial sweeteners of any kind. Even Stevia may be natural, but it's processed and concentrated and it isn't "natural" for anyone to drink that much of it either. I also second the idea of trying a bit of lemon juice.

Just make sure to check the ingredients, because despite being labeled sugar free or zero carb, these mixes need some sort of sweetening agent. We use Mio, but it's sweetened with sucralose (splenda), and many of the others use things like maltodextrin (which is derived from starch) and other sugar alcohols like sorbitol, mannitol, etc., which can be problematic.

I like to drink unsweetened almond milk. There is 1 gram of carbs per 8oz glass. They have unsweetened vanilla flavor and unsweetened chocolate flavor. The chocolate flavor has 3 grams of carbs per cup but all the other only have 1 gram. You could add a dash of stevia to it to sweeten it up.

YES! Thanks, Tony . . . we use almond milk all the time and my everlovin' sweetens it with stevia & I dunno what else, because he thinks all drinks need to be sweet. :p I drink it straight, or with a dribble of HWC to make it more like the whole milk I loved all those years ago.
