Tara's Story

Hi There,

I'm the father of a 13 year old girl who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 2 years ago. After 3000+ injections, and alot of red tape at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, we were able to get her in the OmniPod.

Here is a video that was written, filmed and edited by Tara (with help from a friend).

She has been amazing with her courage, and has never complained once about being "different". Her story is inspirational.

Hi Tim!

welcome here. I would love to see the video, but can't seem to find the link?

Well, apparently I need to be here a little longer to be able to add links.

But go to YouTube...then search TARA and OMNIPOD, she'll be at the top.
Hello Tim: :)

Good to see you here. Welcome!

Aw! What a Pretty and self-confident Young Lady that you have there. Good for her. She did an Excellent job on the video. She will go far.

I've had Type 1 for 47 years without a pump. So your Daughter will have an even longer time with Life. (Not as long as Richard though :D j/k). Tell her to phone the Canadian government and tell them that the Pod is a Good pump.

I wanted a lesson from the pump instructor but she already told me over the phone that the Pod won't be here for some time yet. I'm thinking maybe it hasn't been approved here. Oh well, I'm in no hurry. I Really hope that Tara does Well with her pump and Diabetes, of course. :) She is certainly right...Kids can be cruel. I can honestly say that no one bothered or teased me about having Diabetes so I hope it will be the same for Tara.

Hi Terri-

Thanks for the nice words....47 years? Wow! I hope you are doing well...but I'm sure you are. You're a Professional!

Tara, being the sweet little girl is, has never been teased or anything, but she did hide her condition for about 6 months, before telling her best friend. And wouldn't you know it, her older brother was Type 1.

Once everyone started finding out,all was well...but there was a slight problem at school. A whole gang of girls would show up at the nurses office (at lunch break) to be with her while she tested. Too much commotion...she was told she could only show up with 2 girls.

But I teared up when I heard about all those girls waiting to take their lunch to be with Tara. And now our Diabetes Walk Team keeps growing in number for each event. That kid can raise money!

She is now, of course, turning into a little spokeswoman for the cause. She has been touching the lives of younger kids with Type 1 via the internet.

I personally want to do everything I can from an advocate standpoint, and I'll put contacting your Government about the OmniPod on my list.

I also went from "not really caring" about stem cell research to "DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. It is one of the things I hope the new President can change.

Sorry to talk so much...Good Luck to you and thanks again.

Ha!! That's one thing I don't mind doing....is talking. OMG!! What a Fabulous Girl that you have there. I was shy when I was a Kid...I still am actually. ;) Although now I do tend to speak out more. I've been on Diabetes Communities, listening, joking, talking, researching, learning and hopefully helping some of them, for about 8 yrs. now. It's been Fun and really interesting meeting other Diabetics, hearing their Good and Bad experiences and making Friends. I'm certainly no Professional. They are called Endos and Certified Diabetes Educators, etc. Things change so much It's hard sometimes to discard the old info and learn/keep all the new info updated. My 2 brothers also had Type 1.

Thank you for intending to call our Government to approve the Pod. :) My Hubby's work Insurance would pay for any pump I would choose but I still don't think the Pod is available here for People covered by Insurance. I doubt it.

A Big Hi and Good Luck to Tara from me. Thank you!! :)

Hi Tim,
And welcome. I have upgraded your account early so please feel free to add the youtube video.

I just watched Tara's video. What a great young lady she is. I know nothing about the OmniPod and was able to watch another two videos of a man taking his old Omnipod off and installing a new one. Looks like a great insulin pump. Thanks for sharing your daughter with us. What a wonderful girl!
Hello Tim, welcome to our community! I just finished watching Tara's video. You have a very brave daughter. That is a wonderful video and it brought tears to my eyes.

I have been Type 1 for 63 years and I am very healthy and I have only a few very mild complications. I was diagnosed in 1945 when I was 6. Tell Tara that with her Omnipod and good control she has a very good chance of growing up to be a healthy old geezer like me! Lol! Please tell her I am very proud of her.

Richard
