taste buds, salt and spices

Hi all,

I've been a lover of salt my entire life. Always loved the salty snacks, even put salt on my bacon while cooking it.

Now a sudden change!

For the first time in recorded history my bg has been staying mostly between 80 and 99. Occasional spike up to 108. Of course I'm celebrating.

But I've noticed some changes that just don't seem like "me".

I am extra sensitive to the taste of salt. It just happened over night. I was about to eat my usual bacon and couldn't swallow it, due to the saltiness. ( I hadn't even added extra salt when cooking).
Then it was cheese. Too salty. Now the list has expanded so much that I'm searching out low sodium foods. Even had to buy unsalted butter!

Has anyone else had this happen?
Is the change related to my bg numbers being so low?
Or is it the LCHF diet? I recently took the diet to a new level of LCHF, so maybe it's that?

The taste sensitivity is spreading to other spices and sugar. I can now taste different spices separately in a food. And some of them are too intense. But not to other members of my family.

Would appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks

I found this little snippet regarding D and salt, but not sure what they're saying. It may relate.

I have heard salt craving or dislike -- either one -- is associated with thyroid problems. I have NO idea if this is true, but it might be the culprit ... I crave it, myself.

I always preferred salty junk food (chips, pretzels, etc.) over sweet (cookies, pastries, etc.). Give me a choice between a bag of chips and a bag of cookies, I'll take the chips 19 times out of 20.

There was also a time I was on thyroid meds, as my thyroid is barely functioning; I take kelp supplements for that now, and I seem to do okay (though I still have a tendency towards low body temperature if I am not careful).

Now that I am eating LCHF (or at least moderately HF), I have discovered Pork Rinds as the salty snack food alternative.

Junmarie,

In general, a LCHF diet requires more salt, not less. You're the first person I've heard go the opposite way. But then, few of us ever salted our bacon.

I have found that overdoing the salt can make my blood pressure spike for a couple hours. Doesn't do anything I actually notice.

But my wife's blood pressure spikes give her severe headaches. Could it be blood pressure related?
