Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the beginning of 2010 and Ive been controlling it with diet ever since. I recently saw the movie about Simply Raw, Reverse Diabetes in 30 days where they switch to a raw food diet and a few of them were healed of their diabetes. My question is this. I'd like to try juicing or having green smoothies but I cannot seem to figure out the ratio of veggies to fruit to where it won't make my sugar rise. Does anyone know of any juicing or green smoothie recipes combination that work for diabetics? Has anyone tired switching to a raw food diet to try to control or get rid of diabetes? If you have, or if you have good green smoothie or juicing recipes that wont make your sugar rise, can you please comment. I'd love to hear from you.

Hello and Welcome.

As I see it we need to eat so as to minimise Blood Glucose (BG) spikes and in so doing minimise our need for insulin. Both fruit and vegetables contain Carbohydrates that will tend to raise BGs and by juicing them, you not only remove the fibre which can help to slow their digestion/absorption, but in so doing you refine and concentrate the sugars -- think of it this way: while a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice may have the equivalent sugars (effectively pre-digested) from 4 or so oranges in it, would you sit and eat 4 oranges at one time... and then possibly go back for seconds?

BTW I have watched the same movie and I am very skeptical about any talk of any "cure" -- especially for Type 1 Diabetes... I was very troubled by the pressure the staff were putting on that young Type 1 to stop his insulin.

ANY significant change from the Standard American Diet (SAD) is likely to see dramatic results in the short term... to me that says more about how harmful the SAD is, rather than how beneficial this or that alternative may be. There are healthy alternatives but don't be swayed by a dramatic and emotionally-charged movie, do some reading, experiment and find out what works best for you.

Stick around, read, share and ask questions... there are many here who have managed their BGs very well... often in large part with diet (what we eat). :hippie:

Hi Elishiva :) I agree with Frank. Also I'd be weary of diets that exclude food groups. But you do need to find what works for you and it has to be something you can stick to long term also. It's good to hear you've been able to control your BGLs with diet so far. :D

Not to discredit a raw food or vegetarian approach to diet -- we are opportunistic omnivores so I am convinced we can eat and do well on pretty much everything and anything alive... just so long as it is natural -- but as a word of caution regarding Gabriel Cousens who is the creepy-looking "doctor" wearing crocheted woollen hats in the movie, and running the "spa" where these individual spend their 30 days...

In 1998, Charles Levy, 57, booked a flight to Arizona. Levy, an insurance agent, told his family he was in good health and planned to visit the Tree of Life Spa for a time of rejuvenation with a homeopathic doctor.

He looked forward to the live organic vegan diet and spiritual rest described by Dr. Gabriel Cousens, whose Web site promotes him as an M.D. and M.D.h.

Cousens is not eligible for an M.D. license in Arizona because his license was once taken away (but reinstated) in California and remains censured in New York. According to Arizona Medical Board spokesman Roger Downey, that makes a doctor ineligible for an Arizona medical license. If Cousens were a D.O., he would be eligible. But he's not. He's been practicing here as a homeopath for 15 years.

According to court records from a civil suit filed by Levy's family, Levy showed up at Cousens' secluded campus in the green hills of Patagonia, Arizona. He was hoping for a time of physical and spiritual rest. Cousens told him that injections of cow adrenaline and/or sheep DNA could energize his body. Levy agreed to five injections, which aren't a homeopathic treatment but are allowed by Arizona's homeopathic board.

Unfortunately, the injection site — on Levy's right buttock — grew infected, so he went to see Cousens about it. Cousens didn't recommend an antibiotic. Instead, he treated the growing abscess with acupuncture and massage.

The infected area became green and black. It spread down Levy's thigh, and on March 1, 1998, Levy did not wake up in his dorm room at the Tree of Life Spa. Cousens found Levy unconscious and attempted CPR, with no success.

Cousens did not call 911. Instead, he called an air ambulance, and arranged for a helicopter pickup on the football field of a nearby high school.

Cousens and a nurse carried Levy — draped in a bathrobe, bleeding from his mouth and groin — to a car and drove him five minutes to the field.

A Patagonia police officer was driving by the school when he saw Cousens and a number of spa guests gathered around an unclothed body lying on the grass.

Levy's buttock and thigh were black and swollen. His eyes were wide open. He was dead. After the helicopter took the body, Dr. Cousens told the officer that he'd injected Levy with sheep DNA. Later, Cousens contradicted his statement, saying the injection was actually cow hormones.

Whether the injection was cow or sheep didn't matter to Santa Cruz County Medical Examiner Dr. Cynthia Porterfield. She examined Levy's body and ruled that the injection and subsequent infection killed him. Specifically, she found that Levy died from Clostridium perfringens, a bacteria that grows in gas gangrene. During the Civil War, that bacteria claimed thousands of soldiers' lives when it grew in their battle wounds. Modern antibiotics can kill the bacteria easily when used.

"I spoke with him the day before. The next day, I got a phone call that he was gone," Levy's son, Howard, says. "I pretty much haven't recovered since. He was not on any medication, didn't have high blood pressure, or a weight problem. He could go out and run three miles on the boardwalk."

Levy filed a lawsuit against Cousens, and Cousens paid an undisclosed amount to settle the suit after the medical examiner pinned the death directly on him.

The osteopathic medical board also examined the autopsy and ruled that the medical examiner was right to name the injection and infection as the causes of death.

But when Cousens' dead patient came up before the homeopathic board in 2001, the board dismissed the complaint — despite the medical examiner's findings.

The board ruled that, though a patient did die, the doctor did not violate any laws of homeopathic medicine.

In his October 11, 2000 court deposition, board member Dr. Garry Gordon says he served as the board's lead investigator into Cousens, but he also worked as an expert witness for Cousens in court.

Because the homeopathic board dismissed the complaint, the medical board in California — where Cousens holds his M.D. — has no way of knowing Cousens injected a patient with animal hormones. It has no way of knowing he treated a growing infection with acupuncture or that a county medical examiner named his treatment as the causes of a patient's death.

The Arizona board has since destroyed audio records from that meeting (technically, it did so legally).

"I think it's a travesty that he's still practicing in Arizona," Howard Levy says from his home in New York. "Those people who are allowing this to continue to happen are just as guilty. The simple fact that he can continue to practice medicine in any way, shape, or form shows that the system is failing the general public."

Today, Cousens still practices at his spa in Patagonia. He says he has "28 cubic feet of scientific literature" that disprove the medical examiner. He says Levy died of an extremely rare syndrome that strikes suddenly and kills in hours. Cousens also says Levy was sick when he arrived at the spa and had the gas gangrene infection long before his cow adrenaline injections.

"Dr. Porterfield, the pathologist, really was neglectful," says Cousens, who also says he thinks he would have won the case in court. (He says his insurance company forced him to settle.) "I believe that if we were in front of the medical board, they would have cleared me just as well."

Oh, a "spa," eh? He stand to hugely profit from his exclusive diet, then.

Grinding our food up is one more way to make carbs more accessible -- ie easy to indulge ... use your teeth and digestive juices, instead!

I was wondering...

I was wondering about a raw food diet, as I had heard about this documentary also. I also like trying different diets (sustainable ones, that is), but am not attracted to a raw food diet myself, as I feel my digestive system doesn't like it very much. I did once do a very strict raw food cleanse for 21 days and I felt so weak, I could barely walk! I was doing this cleanse as part of a training program I was in and many others did the cleanse as well, and they didn't seem to be effected the way that I was. I think we all have different diets (not a weight loss diet, but a life-long way of eating diet) that work best for us. And we need to find what feels best. For everyone, real, whole food is the place to start (as opposed to processed, packaged food).

As far as juicing goes, I like the idea of adding some vegetable juice to my diet, but I think we don't know enough about the way food works together (the whole food, rather than just the juice, or just the vitamins) to absorb, digest and distribute all usable components.

Maybe just experiment a little see what works for you and your bg levels.

i read his phase chart.. it is certainly interesting and i suppose if we aim for low gi veggies it might be beneficial since we are supposed to do that anyway. But the lack of protein besides soy is probably not what most people want and can do it as a lifestyle though...


on a side note, is green smoothy (with low gi veggies) + protein powder good times or that is probably no no?

I say ney. I too was looking for juicing recipes, but somehow ended up here. I was searching Diabetic friendly juicing & smoothie recipes.

I found some of the green drinks to be absolutely horrible tasting for one thing. And the fruit smoothies and juices made me spike. It's vurtually all sugar once you strip the skins/peelings off. (Some of the skins are where all of the fiber that your body needs is.) Apples & bananas are definate no-nos. You bg's WILL spike.

My endo advised me to stay away from most if not all juices. Store bought juice has added sugar. Even vegetable juice has added sugar! And I used to drink that stuff by the gallons because for some reason I craved it. Now I get the no sugar added vegetable juice (generic V-8) from WalMart. I add 1/8 tsp of garlic powder and 1tbsp of apple cider vinegar. Adds extra flavor and the garlic keeps your cholesterol down.

I make a smoothie that so far has been ok for me. 1 cup of fresh or frozen raspberries, 1 cup of plain greek yogurt and 1sbsp of soy protien powder. I usually drink it after I work out. If it is too thick, just add a little water or green tea. Sometimes I use 1 cup of decaf green tea or 1 cup unsweetened almond milk. Either one is good.

I eat 98% of my veggies & fruits raw. Like today with my breakfast I had 1 cup of sliced zuchini with a tad of garlic salt.

Most 'Juicers' do extract the fiber and let you drink only the juice. Unfortunately, as has been mentioned this is detrimental to diabetes management.

Fiber is one of those nutritional elements that HAS BEEN PROVEN to help control blood glucose levels.

Instead of 'juicing' per-se, when I want a smoothie I blend mine in a Vitamix blender, which ensures I actually get ALL of the vitamins/nutrients/fiber etc. Sometimes I need to add a little water to get it actually drinkable, but it works great.

That being said, I don't juice too much simply because the best-tasting smoothie recipes I can find are simply either too-high in carbohydrate or too-high in the glycemic index for my liking. I usually just have protein shakes with a little bit of berries, spinach and a few baby carrots thrown in.

And it's very important to note that NO DIET CAN 'REVERSE' DIABETES. A diet can effectively 'reverse' (I prefer to say 'benefit') some of the detrimental effects/complications, but no diet/pill/exercise program/etc. can ever cure it.

A diabetic, even if they manage to control it with diet/exercise/whatever is always diabetic. Once you stop controlling it, all the symptoms will come back.

I have been researching since june how to help my mother with her diabetes and finally we have gotten it . Her blood sugar has remained on 90 for the past two months.she is on half her medication. What did she do ? Juicing a lot. First is get a good juicer champion maybe. Start with the hallelujah diet (check online) it means 85% raw food and 15% cooked food. What do you eat raw: Cabbage, green peas, one carrot(its too sweet),cucumber, avocado pear. Blend all together as breakfast. Or as required please dont starve only small meals. Second is juicing . All vegetables , spinach especially, kale,one apple a day with cucumber for fluid. 8 glasses of this a day for diabetic if its cancer use carrot. The sugar level is too much in carrot for all diabetic. Please note you are not to go off medication but see your doctor every week to monitor and reduce your medication. This is my mothers recipe. However miraculously we were told about hawain spirulina pacifica powder and source natural clorella powder and she added it to her meal. This regulated her blood sugar in 21 days and she has been doing well since then.

i totally disagree with this because my father diabetes reversed with only diet. He was skin and bone when he was admitted with 8yrs of diabetes. Note my dad hated the hospital so he was never on medication. However when medicine failed him and we were battling both diabetes and high bp, another doctor his cousin told us to watch his diet as it was the culprit to his bad state. We live in africa and most of these good foods are hard to find. We starting giving him lots of vegables in every meal and it built up muscle after one month. I agree that once you start eating junk the diabetes will come back.

please note that all sweet fruits should be eliminated from a diabetic diet.except an apple. Cucumber crashes your bs immediately too much may put you in coma. Moderation is key.

Uh, cucumber does not crash blood sugar, at least not in me.
When you eat cucumber as a diabetic, it should be like a meal on its own, which means you are eating 3 pieces.Please try it and see the effect. I happen to have stumbled on it by mistake with my father. I noticed when his blood sugar was high, he would talk anyhow some did not make sense.We travelled and all I could find was cucumber after eating it he slept through and woke up refreshed and calm. Sometimes it could cause purging for some. this is why I added this piece to explain below. Not mine.

I eat cucumber several times a week - usually 1/4 to 1/2 of a cucumber in one sitting. I've never had low or high blood sugar from it. In general, it just seems to be a very blood sugar friendly. I imagine eating too much might raise blood sugar simply because carbohydrates do that.

Also, I'm not on insulin or any medication that crashes blood sugar, so no food gives me hypoglycemia. Because I'm only on Metformin, I have to guard against high blood sugar more than anything else.
