My 16 year old daughter has had type 1 diabetes for 12 years and is on an insulin pump. Her Dr. recently put her on the daily injection of Victoza which is mostly used for type 2 diabetes. She was put on it to help lower her A1C. She just started it a week ago and seems to be doing well. Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with Victoza??

Hi and welcome!

Victoza huh? Not something I would suggest for anyone. Read why here:

As for how to lower her a1c more naturally and a healthier way, may I suggest a low carb high fat diet. I realize it probably goes against everything you've been told to manage her diabetes, and nutrition in general, but it does work. Here's a couple of links to read to help you:

www.bloodsugar101.com
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com

I'm sure you'll have plenty of questions after doing even a cursory read of them ;)

Looking forward to hearing more from you and how your daughter progresses.

Hello Julie and :welcome: to the forum.

This is a link to a web site that we've found very useful. It has a lot of helpful information on diabetes and is worth exploring as a whole. It's Blood Sugar 101 and for a view on your own question, have a look at Byetta, Bydureon, and Victoza

The issue that a lot of folk have with Victoza is that it's the new kid on the block. It's expensive and although some members found it useful, it hasn't been around long enough to identify all the issues that it might have long term.

16 years old is a tough age. Not a bad as 14, but still needing peer approval. Is your daughter pro-active about controlling her diabetes and in counting carbs and testing her blood sugar?

We would certainly welcome her to come and read the threads on this forum, and especially the links given above. You could post any questions she may have (I think one has to be at least 18 to be a member). There are several T1 members who developed their diabetes in childhood who could relate to her concerns and frustrations.

Thank you for the links! I did discuss some of this with her Dr. but I will discuss it again with him! He explained that because she is on a very low dose and only on it temporarily she should be fine. However I will look closer into it! Thank you!

Thank you VeeJay! I will let her know about this forum! She is a typical teenager who tends to her diabetes without putting forth much effort... Meaning she does just the bare minimum! She is a straight A student and is a very hard worker in school... Just not on her diabetes!! This forum might be very helpful for her!

Tell her about Richard (forum member) who has managed his diabetes for over 50 years. He is my inspiration and might be hers.
