hi there. I have had diabetes about a year and a half.

I take a low dose of met, I eat less than 50 carbs a day. I excersize 3 times a week.

this has worked for me.

my ac at Dx was 10.5. my last four have been 6 or under.

I am off my statin.

I have lost just short of 80 lb and holding.

that is what is working for me.

Yannah, that is fantastic, you are a Type 2 role model! I cannot eat less than 120g of carbs without becoming weak and then I cannot do my daily exercises without feeling exhausted the rest of the day. Don't you become tired very easily? I know a dietitian who says adults need a minimum of 130g of carbs each day in order to function properly and have the energy we need to get through the day. She also mentioned that our brains need the carbs to function 100%.

I do see many Type 2 diabetics who are eating well under 100g, like you, and they seem to do quite well with it. I wish I could do that. I am 29 pounds overweight and holding steady for a long time. If I could adjust to 80 0r 90g per day and still exercise, I would probably lose my extra pounds.

The dietician I just saw told me to keep meals to 45-60 grams carbs and snacks 15-30 grams. I was shocked to be allowed that many grams and definitely do not eat that many.

There are many dietitians who will say this to all people, diabetics included. I have read this on many diabetes websites. They may be taught this when they are biing trained as dietitians, I don't know. Since I have 3 meals and 2 snacks each day, I would be eating 165-240 carbs per day. I actually eat 130 carbs per day and that satisfies me very well. It took some adjustment for me to be able to do this. I do not gain weight as long as I stick with 130 carbs. I gradually cut my carb intake each week until reached that level. I know diabetics who eat as little as 50 carbs per day and still exercise and do quite well. I need my 130. I tried 100 but even after several weeks I did not have enough energy to do much exercise at all. It may have something to do with my age. I am 70 now.

The level at which we can be healthy, avoid weight gain and have the energy we need, varies from one person to another. You need to experiment and find your own level. take it slowly. If I ate what your dietitian suggests I would gain a lot of weight and my diabetes would suffer greatly.

Based on my blood sugar, I could not handle 40 g per meal as my Endo recommended. In fact, about 30 is my limit; I try to eat that much only at dinner. And I am finding exercising (gently!) immediately after dinner is also helpful to my blood sugars.

I have added Vitamin D, more Omega 3's (gotta research use of omega 3's some more, especially since I limit myself to flax oil, as a vegetarian) to my regimen.

And it is what works for me. I cannot eat very much starch at all. I am finding tiny portions, like 10 g net carb worth, keep me from missing my beans too much, and I make sure to eat them with a portion of low GI vegetable, to slow them down.

I think you are right about the weight loss part of it all. My sugar levels are now good and I am exercising more and more, but my weight loss has plateaued. As you both said, I need to figure out what works best for me, so I will keep experimenting.

What works for me has to do with the acidic level of the food and liquids I eat/consume. I also make sure to snack through the day at about 2 hour intervals until 8 pm at night.

As I've mentioned in other threads here, by working with the acidic level of foods I seem to have found a good way of controlling my weight, blood sugars, and medication requirments.

I think you'd be wise to re-read our terms of service regarding the "pushing" you hate to do, since it could be construed as promoting, soliciting and/or advertising.

stress of diabetes and be a bit more liberal lest you may face
malnutrition.

With regards to the snacking, I find it funny that they say it's better for your metabolism to eat more smaller meals to keep it boosted. Then you talk to my dentist and you are better off minimizing the amount of snacking or drinks, or minimizing the time you sip on non-water throughout the day as overall you want as much time with your teeth clean as possible to prevent decay.

So I just find it funny how depending the system what is good for one system hurts another. A little yin and yang there.

I am also not sure of the basis for saying it is better for you -- while it might minimize insulin peaks, it might also prevent a buildup of available insulin, to cover them, particularly if you do not make very much. As far as appetite, I am not sure if eating small bites more often is more satisfying, or just makes you hungrier!

I know there are a lot of insulin dependant diabetics who eat several smaller meals and no big meals. This means they are taking less insulin each time. If the blood sugar rises too high because of too little insulin, or drops too low, because of too much insulin, the rise or fall will be minimal because the insulin dose was small in the first place. Small rises and falls gives a more stable control throughout the day. That also gives a smaller standard deviation, and that is always desirable. Hypos are less likely too.
