I'm wondering if anyone else on here has tried quitting dairy and wheat products for their type 1 children. My daughter was diagnosed in October (this year) I became obsessed with finding out everything that I could. I came across various sites that said that it was possible to prolong the honeymoon phase(also mentioned repairing beta cells but i'm not getting excited about that)anyway on dec 1 I completely cut out dairy and wheat products and every 3 days I gave my daughter vitamin b complex (niacinamide). About 2 days later her bgs dropped and over a period of 2 weeks, she went from 13 lantus (night) to 5 units and mealtime (rapid) from a ratio of 5gs carbs to 1 unit to 10gs carbs to .5 units. The diabetes team told me that it was the honeymoon phase so at xmas I let her have everything - dairy, wheat (limited sweet things) and gave her the right ammount of units adding all the carbs. Christmas night for the first time since she came home after her intitial diagnosis her bg level rocketed. I spoke to the pediatric registrar and he told me that it was because her honeymoon phase was over. Again I read everything that I could and discovered that wheat and dairy can stay in the body up to 48 hours after consumption, it is now 2 days later and her bg levels have again dropped so much that she's hardly needing any insulin and is still continuing to get lower. I'm not naive enough to think that I've cured her diabetes, but something definately has happened here.
