I saw my family doctor today and told her I have been feeling terrible--headaches, muscle pains, exhaustion, thirst, frequent urination--every day for weeks now. I had neglected my testing. I tested twice this week, and got 20 mmol (Canadian) both times. I told her that, and she said some people go to the hospital at 20. The doctor is sending me for blood work (almost like she didn't believe I had two 20s in the last few days), but I can't get in till Thursday morning.

Tonight I tested an hour after dinner, and had a 25.7. I am scared right now. My head hurts and all I want to do is sleep lately.

Should I wait and just do the blood tests and see if she'll adjust my meds? Or should I be heading to the hospital? Am I in immediate danger? Am I over-reacting? (I've never had readings this high before).

PS--I'm a type 2 diabetic on Metformin and Crestor. And no, my diet and exercise have not been good the past few months.

First, what did you have for dinner?

In your shoes, I would probably cut out =all= carbs (except from non-starchy veggies), meaning eat just eggs, meat, cheese, fish, healthy oils with my veggies and that should bring your numbers down fairly quickly. If you are already eating like that, then yes, I would go to the hospital.

Keep testing and see how you are able to recover from your dinner spike, and for breakfast have just eggs and bacon/sausage - maybe make an omelet adding cheese. But don't have bread, cereal, milk, sugar, oatmeal or anything like that. I'm guessing your numbers will come down meaningfully ...

It sounds like you need some help in other areas, not just meds. What is your typical diet like?

Thanks for the suggestions. I know I definitely eat WAY too many carbs, and have fallen back into the bad habit of frequently eating fast food. I am going to cut out as many as I can over the next few days, and hopefully the numbers will come down. I am sure most of it has to do with diet. I was just worried about what the high numbers and the symptoms might be doing/have done to my body. I think my body is telling me to "smarten up!"

If Canadian protocols are similar to those here in the U.S., a 27 (500) could call for immediate hospitalization.

I echo all the prior poster' advice that you cut the carbs. Completely, for now -- except for leafy veggies. I also urge you to call your doc about that 25.7. S/he may be able to see you sooner, and/or adjust your meds over the phone.

Upping the exercise is probably a bad idea as long as your sugars are over 250.

Please keep us posted!

The way that your sugar levels are creeping, Metformin wont help much in that either.. at 20 to 25 mmol, you might need stronger oral meds or even insulin injections.

I would go down to the ER to have a look and show them the blood readings of my meter if I were you... No kidding if you are 20 mmol and over. You wouldnt want to wait to hit 30mmol and regret later !!!

With numbers that high why are you only testing 2 times a week. Has your doctor ever discussed with you what normal bgs are and what you need to bring them down below 7. You said your diet is not good, this has a direct effect on your high bgs. As said above, cut out all the carbs to get those bgs down. Also with bgs that high you may need insulin. The other thing I noticed is that you are on Crestor. When I was on a statin drug, my bgs were terrible and I had debilitating muscle and joint pain, as well as terrible headaches. I had to go off the statin before I saw lower bgs.

When you go to the hospital, basically what they will do is give you some insulin to bring your bgs down and then tell you to followup with your own doctor. So I would insist right now that your doctor put you on insulin to bring bgs down. Also once you get them down you need to add daily exercise to your routine. I would not exercise with high bgs , it could make them go higher if you get dehydrated. Also diet change has to be part of your diabetes management.
Any bgs below 140 or 7.7 may be doing significant damage to your blood vessels and organs.

I was like that when I first koimed. I had all the good intentions, but didnt do anything about it , still ate really bad .. UNTIL NOW < after a few side effects : " OOUUCCHH" of sugar in the 500 's , THEN you are willing to do anything to lower it, esp my belly fat , lol I have no fat anywhere else.. LOL Just my upper tummy . bulging !! I HATE IT !!! SO I am eating right, still trying to find some of the item,s yall talk about . coconut oil, and whey powder, I would LOVE to try soem of those shakes sounds like somthing I would do . I have always been a light eater, so making myself eat more, and eat well, its hard.. BUT I am willing aND TRYING because I dont want these side effects returning, or worse !!! sometimes it takes somthing major to happen to get us ON THE RIGHT ROAD> and just like me, I didnt think it was ALL caused just by the food I ate. But YEP !! IF you eat right LC and HF , HP , HF ., YOU CAN beat this thing !!
