I've noticed on some lo-carb recipes, they call for whey protein. Can anyone tell me how to go about learning how to use it? Our grocery store sells Bob's Red Mill brand. Does anyone know if this is a good or not so good brand? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Well the first thing is a shake -- I make mine with almond milk, whey protein, and 2 tsp of splenda flavored syrup.

I have seen it used in recipes, too -- do not use it too often for them, but it is good in pancakes!

I second this - it's very good in pancakes . . . I had some for breakfast just this morning!

Do you buy splenda flavored syrup in the store or online?

I buy mine at Costco. I use the Muscle Milk variety. It comes in chocolate or vanilla. I think it is 2 carbs per scoop which is 27 grams of protein. For pancakes I usually mix it in with flaxseed. Lots of muffin and cookie recipes also include it. It is used to add extra protein to foods. I have made my own fudge/brownie by mixing chocolate whey powder, almond butter, heavy cream and coconut. I mix it up and freeze it in a plastic dish and then cut it up.

jwags ~ I don't suppose there is a recipe for your fudge/brownie? Also, is whey protein ok for type 1 diabetics? I have to bolus for foods that are quite high in protein.

I just use Beefy's recipe . . . it makes plenty for just me. If Chuck wants any, I double the recipe. I make it a pretty thin batter & I don't always use the cinnamon or sweetener . . . just depends how I feel at the moment. ;)

Online -- and if you like pancakes I heartily recommend the DaVinci pancake syrup!

I got one pancake syrup that turned out to be maltitol ... totally untrustworthy!!!

I sometime spike with whey powder, so I imagine if you are a type 1 you would need to bolus for it. Also look on the ingredients, different whey powders have different added ingredients. I try to avoid soy, so I look carefully on labels. I don't have an exact recipe for my brownies/fudge, but here it goes.

1/2 cup of almond butter or peanut butter
2 scoops of chocolate whey powder
a few tablespoons of heavy cream or enough to make dough wet
chopped nuts and or unsweet coconut

Mix ingredients into a dough. Then flatten out with hands or a small rolling pin. I like them around 1/2 inch thick. Then cut with knife or pizza cutter into squares. I then put them into a glad or ziplock plastic container and put in freezer to harden. Once hard you can store in fridge. I usually put wax paper in between layers so they don't stick. If you want you could probably add a few spashes of the Torani syrup to add a little flavor. I buy my Torani and Davinci syrups at netrition.com

I use it as a shake prior and even after some of my work outs and bike rides to keep my Blood Sugar Levels down.
