I found this on another site. A man is telling what his doctor told him about insulin and weight gain, in his own words. What do you think?

"The doctor explained we gain weight is cause our bodies had been used to the high sugar levels so things passed through. Now with better control of the sugar levels our bodies is now grabbing more nutrients and trying to store them. And with cold weather around the corner we will tend to want to eat more to store fat."

He was diabetic for a long time and did not gain weight with the insulin used back then. It was the same with me for 50 years. The body did not store the fatty material while there was so much high blood sugar. Then the modern day insulins entered the picture, the blood sugar was under much better control and there was no longer a lot of high blood sugar. That causes the body to store the fatty material in the food we eat. Thus there is weight gain. In my case that was 57 pounds in the 1990s. I have lost 26 pounds but still need to lose 31 more pounds. Exercise and low carbs helps because that results in lower insulin dosages and the less insulin we use, the more weight we can lose.

What are your comments? Have you heard this before?

My weight, during my whole adult life has been around 230 pounds, except for the time I was on Avandia. For the first year, there was no weight gain, but over the next few years, it creped up to 276. Doc finally took me off me it and put me on Byetta. In six months, my weight was back to 232. Only thing thou, my numbers didn't improve.

So, now I'm on Levemir and my fingers are cross that I don't gain weight again.

I have looked at this as we have a vast supply of insulin to satisfy our food needs and we all know that carbs is the main factor in energy and we just eat too much to what we do in a day, Low carbing has some merit in loosing weight so also the what you eat is what you are is another factor to. You have to admit that we love our carbs. :rolleyes::

I agree with Peter. The majority love their carbs. Many People lose the weight from eating less and exercising more and/or low-carbing as you are doing.

Even though most Diabetics are on these new Insulins and many are under better control(definitely not all), these People will and should only gain a small amount of weight. Being under control does not mean that you will get fat.There are also many other reasons for gaining weight including aging as one, genes, even a fault in the genetic make-up, certain conditions such as Hypothyroidism, etc.

We are all different and we react differently. I think there are some People who may gain weight from Insulin also, according to what some Drs. think now. In a couple of years, they may find this info wrong. But we certainly cannot blanket everyone with: Weight-gain from Insulin.

I have probably been on all the Insulins that you have Richard and I know I haven't gained an ounce from using different Insulins. Getting under better control has gained me about 8 lbs. each time. Over-eating, slacking off exercise and eating the wrong foods, these I know I've gained 16 lbs. from several times in my Life. It would have been more but I turned it around each time and went back to my Good weight. There is still so much that we do not know about the effects of the world around us and Diabetes and us.

I love carbs.. lol I will not deny it!! I have been trying to be better about eating so many ... but pasta is my downfall!! I love me some pasta salad -- or meatballs and spaghetti!! lol

I contribute my weight gain, which is still not much, but I contribute it to finally getting to a place in my life where I have accepted all the craziness that has went on in the last year! And that I am finally happy!

I lost 35 lbs since going on an insulin pump, and have kept that weight off for an additional year now.

Tight control, and restricting my carbohydrate intake to 80 grams a day have worked marvelously in my case.

Not sure about Type 1 diabetes as is what you have, but much of Type 2 diabetes stems from the body producing a lot of insulin to counteract all the sugar that is consumed over the years and the body eventually becoming resistant to it.
I agree with Dr. Atkins in that a low carb diet will train your body to burn fat instead of burning sugar and carbs.

Insulin Hepls Body Store Fat

I've shed a lot of weight recently due to high BG levels. The reason being as I understand it, is that my body is dumping glucose and instead using the stored fat for energy (not the greatest way to lose weight). Insulin helps the body to store fat and is thus often associated with weight gain.

No or low insulin= body uses stored fat for energy since it cannot utilize the glucose (weight loss).

Insulin= body better utilizes glucose and stores extra as fat (possible weight gain)

Animal fat = F A T ! ! !

OK, I would think that any fat content will just hang on YOU if you eat fatty foods of that extreme while that you are in control.
So as long that you don't have any Keytones in your body then fat just hangs around. I had seen a fit and happy Ballerina Dancer enjoying a pork roll and you would just shriek at the thought that she's gaining some weight. Well let me tell you she will have trouble to keep that fat that she is eating as her activity is on the move all day and preform on that night. (Gee I wish I was still dancing :eek:) and they complain that ballet keeps them trim. ;);):)

So if you're a fit and be happy then dance!! :eek::D:rolleyes:

Hi - since May 2008 I have gradually put on 4 stones (14 lbs to a stone). I am eating a healthy diet. I notice my ankles have swollen terribly, exercise I can do is on a stepper, not much as I also have a back complaint, which the weight wont help, it is called a Grade II sponylolisthesis basically a slipped vertebrae in the back and told not to exercise too much, so it is a vicious circle.

I beleive that weight gain is because of insuling and nothing else...as insulin is the weight gaining hormone and if it is in the body unused it will lead to weight gain..weather your bg levels are high or low.. this can be expalined in a example of type 2 diabetics....in initial days when they are undiagnosed they have higher levels of bg and still they are in process of gaining weight .Yes you would think they sudden loss of weight is major symptom of diabetes.I agree but that happens when bg levels remain constantly high and insulin can not convert them into energy..body hits panic button and stored fat is consumed for energy which results in weight loss,but still person have high bg levels .

I like to think of it as a math equation....

On a normal person if they eat excess food, their body converts their sugars to energy and nutrients. If they do an equal amount or greater amount of work to burn the food they don't get fat as the don't store as much.

On a diabetic, your equation is broken. you don't convert the sugars to energy effectively so it can't be turned into fat. Infact you lose weight more often then not because your body is starved for energy so it breaks down fats to create some glucose to try and nourish your system. But since energy isn't being created properly all it's doing is flooding the system with sugars. Much like flooding a car's engine. So all diabetes meds really do is allow your body to create ample energy, it's your job to burn it, or reduce the intake.

Now at the same time, without having a medical degree or anything I can't say that some diabetes meds might not have a side effect of increasing fat, or maybe even making the body more likely to store excess fat. It just seems to me that it's not the fault of the medicines.
