I'm talking about the American Diabetic Association. How can they be so far off in their recommendations and still be saying "let's stop diabetes"? There are reports and articles like this: Number of Americans with Diabetes Rises to Nearly 26 Million
More than a third of adults estimated to have prediabetes
and then the ADA puts out things like this. Please! Look at the recipes they suggest for a diabetic on Valentine's Day!!!! Like this one:

2 large eggs
2 egg whites
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup granular no-calorie sweetener
3 cups 1% low-fat milk
1 ½ teaspoons espresso granules or 1 tablespoon instant coffee granules
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
16 teaspoons light brown sugar

There's 23g of SUGAR...for crying out loud.

And the other recipe has 51g of carbs of which 13g are sugar! This is crazy! No wonder we all have to figure it out for ourselves! Unbelievable!!!

I agree Diana, the ADA doesn't seem to have their 'head on straight'. When I was first diagnosed, my doctor required me to attend a diabetes and nutrition class taught at our local hospital. At the end of the course they would review each person's food plan privately. The instructor advised me to have 60 + carbs at each of three meals plus three snacks of 20 carbs each 3 times a day = 240 carbs a day. Hello..........I'm overweight and they are recommending I eat that many carbs. They even said it was what the ADA recommends. Baloney!!!

The only thing I can figure out is, just like with most other diseases, the pharmaceutical companies (and the corn growers--producers of high fructose corn syrup--and sugar companies) don't WANT people to figure out that it's the carbs that is causing most of the problem. The dieticians are learning from old teachings I believe and the doctors are getting their info from the pharm companies. Change does not come easy, especially when you have billions of $$$$ lobbying in the background.

I got this from the Diabetes Forecast....the ADA's official magazine:

3 (4-serving) packages sugar-free instant vanilla pudding
3 cups fat-free milk
1 (11 oz.) box reduced-fat vanilla wafers (divided use)
6 bananas
1 (8 oz.) container fat-free frozen whipped topping, thawed

Now since when does the fat free stuff keep your blood sugar down???????
OMG I'm getting totally frustrated. The more I read, the madder I get!

As if this recipe isn't goofy enough, they have 6 bananas in it? I know some people are lucky enough to be able to enjoy bananas, but I have a lot of trouble with elevated BG when I eat even a small banana.

I wonder what the dietitian gets paid to come up with these kinds of recipes? And for what it is worth Diana - I agree with you about the BIG MONEY. If there was a cure tomorrow for diabetes just think of all the people who might be out of a job.

When I left the hospital I was told by the dietitian and and the endo to eat normal. I was to take a plate and divide in half and then one side half again. Top half was salads, bottom right quarter was meat and bottom left quarter was starches. With that I was to adjust my insulin to match. And 5 carb units per meal.

So with that I often wonder am I to eat to their recommendations and adjust insulin to match or should I eat to lower my insulin usage. I hate insulin and feel I am happier and will be healthier in the long run not having the insulin. I took the later of the two and my stats such as cholesterol are in better standing.

But seeing a recipe like Diana posted makes me wonder what or who the ADA is thinking.

Like I say, I don't need any sweetner, I am sweet enough as it is. :behindsofa:

You guys are right on target . . . undue influence from other agencies/associations with a huge financial stake in the outcome. ADA is essentially useless to any conscientious diabetic, just like the FDA's food pyramid, and the AMA's "diabetic" diet . . . somebody else here said it better the other day: the whole cabal is "bought and paid for".
