Hello! My wife is type 1 and has been for about 9 yrs. She is on the pump and manages her diabetes quite well. The issue is we recently found out she is losing her job of 16 yrs due to cutbacks in the industry she works in and as a result she will lose her insurance:(( I was layed off two months ago and have no health insurance either. A huge concern ,obviously, is her health insurance. We are trying to find resources for insurance for diabetics in her position?! She has a few months left on her policy but as of June that will be gone. There is mention in her furlough paperwork of COBRA insurance but I believe we have to pay the premium up front which is insane expensive. Hopefully I can find a job that offers coverage for her but that is not the case at the moment. Looking ahead and trying to find something for her in the meantime, does anyone out there have experience or resources for affordable health coverage for diabetics in her position?!? Thanks so much and please let us know if you know of anything that may come to mind!

You sound like a perfect candidate for an Affordable Care Act plan. Supposed to ensure coverage for pre-existing conditions. You might check on that and please let us know what you find.

You'll need to sign up by 3/31 (2 days from now as I type) ... BUT ... you have until 4/15 to choose a care provider.

This is a brand-new date extension, announced only a few days ago. You'll probably want to do a screen print of your sign in, to prove you did start the process on/before 3/15.

Best of luck to you both!

Losing a job is a change of status. So deadline does not apply. Now there may be a separate deadline for changed status. Example you mAy need to sign up within 2 weeks of the change or something like that.
